Background

capitolTwenty-four Americans of African descent were elected to the U.S. Congress from 1868 to 1901. However only 22 were permitted to serve their terms. These Americans are not widely known nor are their achievements revered.

CONGRESS IN COLOR will chronicle these 19th century American Congressmen of African descent and their contributions toward the development of American democracy.
