As a young boy, Robert Smalls’ slave master hired him out as a waterman in low country South Carolina. He rebelled by working hard and earning extra cash to buy his freedom. Smalls did not disavow his native country but instead sought to make it live up to its ideals of equality and justice. He respected and utilized these democratic ideals and served his constituents and the country for five terms in the U.S. Congress.
Part II - America’s Other Founding Fathers
This documentary will chronicle these 19th century American Congressmen of African descent and the role the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments affected social change and their political roles.
